Israeli forces push deeper into Lebanon as Tyre evacuated

Israeli forces are advancing deeper into southern Lebanon, expanding ground operations as evacuation orders now cover the historic coastal city of Tyre. The humanitarian crisis has reached staggering levels, with over one million people displaced—roughly a fifth of Lebanon's population.\n\nThe national death toll since March 2 has surpassed 900, with Lebanon's Health Ministry reporting 912 fatalities and 2,221 injuries as of March 17. The Israeli army announced Tuesday that its 36th Division had joined efforts to expand the ground incursion following a new operation that reportedly pushed 7–9 kilometers into Lebanese territory.\n\nHezbollah has continued to engage Israeli military sites, stating its actions are in response to continued Israeli attacks despite a November 2024 ceasefire agreement. The militant group also cites the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28 as a catalyst for renewed hostilities.\n\nIn response to the escalating violence, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun convened a high-level security meeting at the Baabda Palace on Wednesday. Military and security chiefs briefed Aoun on developments across Lebanon, including the human and material toll, large-scale displacement, and extensive damage to property. Aoun called for a unified national discourse that emphasizes solidarity and rejects sectarian incitement, urging local authorities to expand shelters for displaced civilians and calling for tighter monitoring of prices to combat monopolistic practices.\n\n'The current phase requires close oversight and a heightened sense of national responsibility,' Aoun said, urging political actors to rise above personal interests. The Lebanese state remains caught between a disproportionate Israeli offensive and a Hezbollah military apparatus that continues to engage despite the ongoing bombardment.
