Indian national killed in Riyadh as regional war expands
New Delhi confirms first civilian death in Saudi capital amid escalating West Asia conflict, evacuates stranded citizens.
The Indian government confirmed on Friday that an Indian national was killed in Riyadh following security incidents in the Saudi capital on March 18, as the regional conflict continues to expand beyond its initial theaters.\n\nThe Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep condolences over the death, with Additional Secretary for the Gulf Division Aseem Mahajan stating, 'Late last night, we received information regarding the tragic demise of an Indian national during an attack in Riyadh on 18th March. We express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Our mission in Riyadh is in touch with the family and is coordinating closely with the local authorities for the early return of mortal remains to India.'\n\nThe fatality brings the total number of Indian casualties in the region to six, with one additional national reported missing. Mahajan confirmed that Indian missions in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, and the UAE are in regular contact with concerned authorities regarding the missing national and for the early repatriation of mortal remains.\n\nIndia has also been actively evacuating its citizens from conflict zones. Fifteen Indian crew members of the MT Safesea Vishnu, who were safely rescued, departed Iraq on Thursday and are expected to arrive in India from Saudi Arabia. This follows earlier repatriation efforts in which 24 rescued Indian seafarers—16 from MV MKD Vyom and 8 from MT Skylight—returned to India from Oman.\n\nThe conflict in West Asia has now entered its 21st day, with the Indian government and its missions maintaining a high level of vigilance to monitor the security situation and ensure the safety of the Indian diaspora across the Persian Gulf. An estimated 9 million Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making the community one of the largest expatriate populations in the region.
